Design Inspiration…Travel

Get away from that computer! In today’s digital age, it’s way too easy to think and live like the world is on the computer and not out there to be seen, heard, smelled and experienced. As a web designer in the Wichita, KS area, I know I have the tendency to do that!

Anyway, travel is one of my favorite ways to re-energize and get some R&R away from the computer (granted, I do take my laptop with me, so there’s that…lol). Even if it’s just a daytrip to a city a few hours away from your home, I’d highly recommend an occasional travel break. Web design involves both technical prowess and creative genius; both of which require a sharp and alert mind. I’ve been blessed to travel all across the USA and can see how that has greatly enriched my life.

Here’s a few ways…

  • A couple of years ago, I drove to Kansas City for a web conference…it was interesting and I enjoyed the opportunity to hang out with other designers. I also have enjoyed looking for design inspiration in window displays in New York, through architecture, and even creative ways people have solved problems in their environments (for example, I was in Flagstaff last week and the WalMart had coverings for the cars to drive under, which was because of the snow there…they even had heaters on the coverings to keep the snow melting!). It’s little things like this that encourage me about the importance of design details in the web design work I do.
  • Travel is freeing…and offers lots of unexpected experiences. Remember the time when…the most memorable times are usually the ones that we didn’t plan. Creativity and problem-solving thrive in an unstructured environment, which is hard in normal day-to-day life.
  • Travel offers lots of opportunities to interact with people in all walks of life. Unlike sitting at the computer, you’re having real people interactions!

So, go out and see the world, dear readers! Or at the very least, take a short break in a new coffee shop in town. :-)
