What’s in a home page? Web design tips for success

Some key points to remember

Think of a website’s home page like you think about your own home. It’s not just a place you live, but instead is the center (the heart) of everything you do. The home page of a site encapsulates your services, summarizes your company’s origins / vision statement, points visitors to read testimonials of your success and encourages people to read more and spend more time with your company.

As you can see, in order to develop an effective home page, you have to have your overall goals for the business in place. In a sense, a home page is almost like a business plan…where are you going and why should people care? As you think through content, work with your web designer or SEO expert to build out pages (including the home) for your site. Here’s some pages you’ll probably need:

  • Home
  • About (you / the company)
  • Services (and sub-pages for each service area)
  • Sitemap
  • Contact

Of course, if you are selling products online, you won’t need “Services” pages, but will instead have Cart, My Account, Checkout, Shop and other Product pages for each item listed.
