Beginning the Website Design Process

“When I took office, only high energy physicists had ever heard of what is called the World Wide Web....Now even my cat has its own page.”
— Bill Clinton, 1996

In the last 20 or so years, the World Wide Web (or internet) has basically become a staple to everyday life. As such, businesses and individuals alike (if they haven't already) should take time to think about their online presence. That may mean creating a Twitter account or starting a Facebook page...or you may decide that you need a website or blog.

But starting a new website or blog can be a daunting venture. How should you start? What will you need? And a hundred other questions start filling your mind.

Well, first of all, you'll need to decide if you want to hire out the design work or try to create something on your own. As a web designer, my recommendation is to leave the stress and website coding to professionals. You may spend a little more up front, but you'll get much better, custom results and can have him or her add features or change design details to help you best represent yourself online. He or she can also advise you on optimizing your site for Google.

So, let's say you've chosen me to be your web designer. What next? Below is a list I've put together with the important materials/facts I would need from you to get started.

Basic Information/Files Needed:

  • Several examples of websites you like — they should give me a feel for the “look” you're going for on your new site.

  • If applicable, any existing company/product/service logo files and colors.

  • Images you may want me to include in the site. It's better to send more images than less, because that gives me plenty of options to work with. If you don't have images, I may need to find and purchase stock images.

  • A list of the pages you'll want included on the site.

  • At some point during the design process, I'll also need the text you want included on the site.

Other possibilities to consider:

  • Will you want one or more e-mail addresses associated with the new website?

  • Facebook/Twitter links and/or social media interconnectivity?

  • Do you want a blog on the site?

  • Do you plan to sell things on the website? If so, do you have a PayPal account already set up?

  • Will you want the site to be accessible/formatted for mobile devices such as the Ipad and Iphone?

Hopefully, this post helps you better understand the website design process! If you already have a website or blog, but are in need of an update, these thoughts will also apply to you.

Pinterest Project

Okay, I admit it...the Pinterest bug has bitten me. As a designer and craft-loving person, it's only natural, though! Pinterest, a bulletin board of sorts for online images, is an awesome place to inspire and be inspired for the next artistic adventure.

Anyway, the other day, I was super excited to finish a t-shirt dress to vest makeover inspired from this pin on Pinterest. I thought y'all would like to see it, so below are several pictures and a short tutorial on how I created it!

The final project...front view.

The final project...back view.

A before picture.

First, cut down the center of the dress' front. Then, open up the dress and cut out the vest shape (the dotted lines on figure 2 above will give you an idea of where I made my cut lines. After that, you'll have the vest shape (see figure 3). I then took the large scrap of extra fabric, cut strips out of it and pulled each strip to make long, string-like ropes (see figure 4). By folding the stretched fabric ropes in two lengthwise, I was then able to use the ropes to bind all the raw fabric edges of the vest. (I knotted the ropes at the point of each front panel for a cute touch. Finally, I took another couple of fabric scraps (ones that already had binding on a long edge), did a quick ruffle stitch on them and added the ruffles to the vest's front. I also sewed two of the ropes in the front so I can tie the vest closed.

I hope you are inspired and encouraged to try your own Pinterest makeovers...this one was so much fun to do!! I also had an awesome time making t-shirt rings and scarves with a friend. Here's a link to the t-shirt ring and t-shirt scarf pins we were inspired by!

January Adventure

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.”
— Bill Bryson

What a wonderful whirlwind these past few weeks have been! How so, you ask? Well, first of all, I had the opportunity to attend Passion 2012 in Atlanta, where I enjoyed spending time with friends, learning from the speakers and especially was moved by the experience of worshiping Jesus with 45,000 other people. How incredible that was! From a design perspective, I also loved the beautifully done brochures, signage and other design-y details at the conference.

After that, I spent time with family in the Atlanta/Savannah/Charleston area, where I got to practice with our new SLR camera!

Left: We enjoyed soaking up the quaint Charleston experience. Right: A really neat sign in Savannah from a store all about honey.

A highlight from the trip was attending the AmericasMart conference in Atlanta. The place was absolutely monstrous...and had sooo many shops!

Left: While at the AmericasMart conference, we got to learn photo styling tips from Emily Henderson of HGTV. Right: Jeff Mauro of Food Network was also at the conference. His sandwiches are so yummy!!

Left: Then, I also got the chance to go to Chicago. We had always wanted to take a train trip, so this was the perfect opportunity to ride via Amtrak to Chicago. It was quite the experience! Right: Chicago is such a cool place to learn about cutting-edge trends.

One of our favorite stores on the famous Magnificent Mile was the AllSaints Spitalfields store, which had incredible window displays that featured probably hundreds of vintage sewing machines.

Inside the AllSaints Spitalfields store was just as amazing, with industrial-type machinery used as display tables and exposed brick walls. (More info at http://www.us.allsaints.com/)

Looking back, looking forward

After celebrating the warmth and wonder of Christ's birth, it's always hard for me to say goodbye to the Christmas season. But, even if it's to a lesser degree, there's something pretty great about celebrating the new year. That's because this is a natural time of reflection...a time to think about choices made and changes to be made.

For me, this past year has been one of exciting growth. Although there have been many areas of growth, I especially feel that it's been in the area of relating to people. I've gotten better at being open and honest about myself. I also think that this year I've become a better talker. As a naturally introverted person, I can tell a lot about people just because I'm detailed and have a designer's observant nature. However, this year, I've improved my question asking skills...I've been less afraid to ask all kinds of questions in order to try to find out more about others. These skills have also made me a better designer, because I won't assume that I know what a client's thinking, but will instead ask him or her to explain it.

Anyway, in looking to the new year...

  • I'm REALLY excited about learning how to use our new SLR camera! I can't wait to take some pictures and post them for y'all to see.

  • I have several exciting ideas for new marketing strategies, including both an online venture and a cool brochure idea.

  • Improve my time management skills. To help with this, I designed a beautiful, personalized cover page and put together a three-ring binder with different sections for short- and long-term to dos as well as for several other categories I'm planning to spend a lot of time on.

  • Spend more time investing in others. This may take a variety of forms, but I'm looking forward to God's leading in this area. Investing in people is SUCH a blessing and has way more than monetary benefits.

  • Speaking of money, I want to look into options for investing in the stock market this coming year. I've had an interest in Wall Street dealings for many years and think the time is right for me to do some investing of my own. I'll keep you posted.

So, my friends, enjoy this New Year's Eve. May I leave you and the year 2011 with the words from 2 Corinthians 5:17:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Don’t hate change…

Once upon a time, there was a quirky English bulldog. She had lots of food, a heated doghouse and lots of love from her owners. Basically, she had it made. This dog hated change, though. And yes, this dog is Sophie, our English bulldog.

Yesterday, I was again reminded of how much Sophie hates change. We had gotten the dog a comforter from the Goodwill so she'd have a comfortable place to sleep in her doghouse. Of course, the comforter had gotten quite dirty and nasty over several months' time, so we moved her old comforter out of the doghouse and replaced it with something else. Well, Sophie did not like this. All day yesterday, she clung to the old comforter - sitting on it outside instead of in her warm doghouse. We felt bad for her, but knew the change was for her best. Still, she didn't like it. Oh dear.

This incident is so applicable to the life of a designer - especially a web designer. I know I've talked about it before, but adapting to and learning from change is such a key aspect to the growth of a designer. This little lesson from my dog yesterday reminded me of it once again.
