Responsive Web Design

smartphoneIf you're one of the many people today who use their smartphone as a primary access point for the web, you may be interested in today's video selection. As a web designer, special care should be taken to develop sites that work well on small-screened devices such as the iPhone or iPad. This can be done through the marvelous efficiency of CSS.

So, enjoy today's selection...a clip from a responsive web design tutorial from Lynda.com!

Words as visual art

I just love today's video selection! This video features the Ten Commandments in a typographical and graphically-interesting way. I particularly like how the designer incorporated the actual letterforms of the words into the animations and the way that that helps to better convey the message being presented. As Helmut Schmid said,

“Typography needs to be audible. Typography needs to be felt. Typography needs to be experienced.”

Experience beautiful typography in the video below!

Marketing

Hello, hello dear readers! Hope your week is going really well. I'm super excited to show you a few pictures of a marketing card I put together recently for TJ Design. It features a ladybug on the front (of course!) and my signature round business card...but, this time, printed on a fresh shade of gray paper. The ladybug card itself was a happy find at a local store, so I was able to customize it by designing and printing my own color-coordinated interior. Enjoy!

Also, check out this week's Wednesday Video...a presentation given at an AIGA design conference by Phyllis Aragaki, director of the in-house Creative Studio at Target.

Wednesday Video

A good friend shared this adorable music video with me earlier this year. It's a great example of good design in videography...simple but effective props and backgrounds, good usage of color, awesome fashion/costume design...and just plain cuteness. Check it out!

Also, remember to check back again next week for another Wednesday Video, where I'll be posting informative and inspirational video finds from the design genre!

Picking the right picture

The definition of Graphic Design is:

“The art or profession of visual communication that combines images, words, and ideas to convey information to an audience, especially to produce a specific effect.”

As such, the importance of selecting the right...the “perfect”...images, words and ideas is life or death to the success of a designer's product. Today, I'll be focusing on the first of those three elements...the picture.

What's really so hard about picking the right picture for a design project? I mean, if it's a pretty picture, then use it, right? Wrong!

Thus, here are several tips for selecting the right picture for designs:

  • If you're designing something that has a large, dominant image, make sure to pick a picture with white space. The image needs to have room built into it for text.

  • Closeup pictures are more graphically interesting and pack a punch, visually speaking. For example, if you're designing something about sandwiches, you'll want a picture that features the yummy vegetables and nine-grain bread front and center.

  • Know the difference between vector images and jpeg image files. Vectors can be re-sized to as big or small as needed without any problem. If you choose a jpeg image file, see my point below.

  • If you choose a jpeg image file, make sure that you get the right file size for the project you're working on. Stock image sites like Shutterstock or iStockPhoto have different download options. Your best bet is to get the biggest file size you can afford...it gives you more to work with and makes for a MUCH better final product.

Anyway, I hope that these tips have been helpful for you. Have a wonderful week and I hope you had a blessed Easter!

Method behind the (March) Madness

March Madness holds a special place in my heart. Ever since I can remember, basketball has been my favorite sport. Maybe, just maybe, it's because my Dad loves watching the games on TV and because my Mom has bought books for our family about the lives of famous coaches. Maybe it's because I've grown up in an entrepreneurial family and understand the camaraderie and teaching atmosphere that exist between a boss/coach and his employees/players. Or, maybe it's because I love the strategy of “bracketology.”

Whatever the cause, as a designer and marketing person, I think it's pretty fascinating to observe our country bond over basketball. I mean, after all, logos and logo ideas are all over the place. Then there's the TV commercials, t-shirts, witty slogans and university promotional gear. And don't forget the bracket itself. Truly, design is everywhere during March Madness. It's awesome!

So, to celebrate all this madness — which isn't really madness because there are so many designers and marketing gurus involved — I've put together a few fun, NCAA tournament-related links below for your enjoyment.
